Did I sleep last night? An hour, maybe. Two at the most. My drained body doesn’t feel like I did. A trance, probably. The kind you get on a long journey. The ones that trick your brain into thinking you’ve slept.

But how can I sleep knowing that I’m so close to Ben? If I can find him, convince him to help me look for Sean, then I stand a chance at putting my life back together.

That’s weird. In the early weeks of the virus, when I dreamed of putting my life back together, I was imagining being home again, with Sean living next door. College. Driving lessons. Clothes shopping. Squeezing my feet into uncomfortable, yet gorgeous, pairs of leather boots. Now, putting my life back together means freeing Sean from a nest of vampires, and heading back to the farm, back to Neil and Ellie. Back to Hannah and her baby.

That’s my new version of normal. Of happy. And right now, that’s all I want.

The sun has been up for the last hour, so I climb out of bed in defeat.

Charlie’s already awake, sitting in the living room, reading a comic book. Not that I expected any less. He’s like an old retired man, trapped inside the body of a teen.

“All right, Charlie?” I ask.

He smiles and puts the book down on his lap. “Okay. Did you get much sleep?”

“Not really,” I reply. “Couldn’t get my brother out of my head.” I sit on the armchair, resting my hefty head against the back cushion.

“So, what do you want to do then?” he asks, but his usual enthusiasm seems depleted.

“I have to keep looking for them.”

Charlie nods and goes back to his comic.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, but it’s obvious. I’ve asked too much of him. Dragged him down with my massive problems.

He doesn’t answer, just turns the pages faster than anyone could read them.

I lean forward. “Come on, Charlie. What’s on your mind?”

He finally looks up at me. “You don’t want to hear it.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Okay, then. I think Sean is dead, and I think your brother is long gone.”

His words cut deep, but I don’t show it on my face. “I understand.”

“You’re not mad with me for saying it?” he asks, his voice soft, lacking the usual spark.

I shake my head. “I know it’s hard for you to understand, but I can’t give up.”

“It’s not hard for me to understand. If I thought my father was out there somewhere, then I’d be doing the exact same thing. But too much time has passed. And there are too many nests. You couldn’t possibly search them all. Vampires are fast. They can cover huge distances in minutes.”

“I know, but what if Ben is their leader? He’s the first born. He’s strong. Smart. He freed hundreds of vampires from prison. And his name is all over those walls. If I find him, maybe he can help me.” My throat catches. “But if Sean really is dead, then I can get some closure.”

A lone tear rolls down my cheek.
